Sex and the City Uncovered

Sex and the City Uncovered

Sex and the City, the popular television series and motion picture franchise, glorifies the lifestyles of four fashionable New York women who hang out in bars and talk bluntly about their broad range of sexual experiences. The awards lavished upon the show would imply it holds some redeeming value. However, despite claims that Sex and the City is ultimately about the longing for a committed relationship, the glamorization of casual sex and always looking fabulous can take a toll on impressionable young women. Just ask Marian Jordan. In Sex and the City Uncovered she admits, “A painful existence of ‘looking for love in all the wrong places’ is hidden behind images of couture fashion, witty dialogue, and beautiful people. I know this to be true because I’ve lived it.”

A former party girl with her own stories of hookups, hangovers, and heartbreak, Marian now speaks about the unfailing love she has found in Jesus and helps struggling women fill their hearts with this same joy.

About the Author

Marian Jordan set out in her twenties to move to the big city. During those days Marian spent her time in a desperate quest to find the unconditional love and acceptance she thought would make her whole. She thought is she could find this love by filling the void with parties, sex and Manolos, but things didn’t work out like the HBO series “Sex and the City”. Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte, the characters on the hit network series “Sex and the City” looked like they had the life. However, Marian found that this lifestyle looked better on television than in real life.

Turning away from her days as the “life of the party,” Jordan now speaks to women nationwide about the message portrayed in this popular TV show that disguises a painful existence of “looking for love in all the wrong places” with images of couture fashion, beautiful people and witty dialogue. She addresses the toll such a lifestyle can take on young, impressionable women, who go to great lengths to always look fabulous, even if it means forgoing rent for a new pair of shoes. And speaking from personal experience, she relates that one-night stands, in real life, only lead to further disappointment and disillusionment once the sun comes up.

Today Marian is the founder of Redeemed Girl Ministries. She is an active speaker, guest lecturer, and published author. She is a graduate of Southwestern Seminary and lives in Houston.

The Girlfriends Guidebook

What am I supposed to do when my friend is giving me the silent treatment and I don't know why? How am I supposed to react when it feels like middle school, and I’m the girl not picked to sit at the lunch table?

While there are ample books for women on dating, career, marriage, and motherhood, less prevalent are thoughtful writings about the everyday handling of female friendships. Inspired by the highs and lows of a backpacking trip across Europe with four gal pals, Marian Jordan's The Girlfriends Guidebook charts a winning pathway through "jealousy, competition, control, anger, manipulation, and resentment-just to name a few less than cuddly aspects of our personalities."

Informed by her faith, Marian encourages deeper friendships built on Christlike honesty and love, emphasizing the development of such qualities as loyalty, trustworthiness, compassion, and forgiveness. Jordan also makes it clear that The Girlfriends Guidebook should be read first with one's self in mind... recognizing that when we are freed from our own emotional baggage we will really be able to enjoy the journey!

Radiant

Like a bride shines on her wedding day, author Marian Jordan calls her growing readership to glow with the passion of love for Jesus in her fourth book, Radiant. Combating today's darkening culture, she mixes modern wit with tender and timeless illuminations of Scripture, encouraging women to:

know their God-given purpose and identity

look to Christ as their true power source

reflect His glorious light in this world with an undivided heart

Jordan also includes a helpful section on the empowering work of the Holy Spirit, small group discussion questions, and other recommended resources..

The List

Every girl has her version of “The List,” a handful of goals she wants to achieve (school, travel, career, marriage, children, etc.) by a certain age. But if those dreams don’t come true according to schedule—or they do but don’t meet expectations—what then?

Marian Jordan (Wilderness Skills for Women) says there’s a better list to live by, a God-honoring, in-the-moment set of priorities that makes every season of life beautiful however long it may last. The biblical aspirations she prescribes and enthusiastically elaborates on are to Shine, Hope, Pursue Beauty, Seek First, and Dance. If a girl can embrace this list above all else, she may find herself already in the midst of her happily ever after.

Wilderness Skills for Women

From Moses to Jesus, so many heroes of the Bible had to endure some type of wilderness season in their life, a time of testing that was painful to endure but ultimately brought glory to God.

In Wilderness Skills for Women, rising author/speaker Marian Jordan sees the same thing happening today as she and her friends still find themselves going through periods of isolation, temptation, sorrow, and waiting. Whether it’s relationship drama, the constant pull of our sinful nature, a health issue, or any variety of unmet dreams, Jordan turns readers to God’s Word as the ultimate wilderness survival guide.

Conversational and self-deprecatingly confessional in her delivery, this young writer finds ways to have fun with delicate subject matters, using wilderness analogies to great effect in chapters titled "Drink Plenty of Water," "Seek Shelter," and "Don’t Eat the Red Berries."

Hookups, hangovers, and heartbreak

Popular TV series Sex and the City features four stylish New York women frequenting bars and talking bluntly about their broad range of sexual experiences. Awards lavished on the show suggest some redeeming values. But despite claims that it’s ultimately about the longing for a committed relationship, the glamorization of casual sex and so on can really mess with impressionable young women.

Just ask Marian Jordan. In Sex and the City Uncovered she admits, "A painful existence of ‘looking for love in all the wrong places’ is hidden behind images of couture fashion, witty dialogue, and beautiful people. I know this to be true because I’ve lived it."

Sharing her own storied past, Marian now celebrates an unfailing love she has found and helps struggling singles find this same joy by answering questions such as:
• Why can’t I have sex without regret or desiring commitment?
• Why do I need alcohol or food to make me feel better?
• Why do I go into debt to buy the latest designer items?
• Why don’t I feel good about myself around other women?
